MUA
Manipulation Under Anesthesia (MUA) is a non-invasive, highly specialized treatment for people with chronic neck, back, and joint problems. MUA gives the doctor the advantage of adjusting the joints and stretching the muscles without resistance. Patients may have apprehension, severe muscle spasm, or just too much pain to stretch and manipulate without the aid of anesthesia. Fibrotic adhesions which restrict normal movement are altered and broken up, muscles are stretched, which reduces restriction in or around the joints. These changes cause the pain and discomfort to be decreased or eliminated.
The following are some of the conditions helped with Manipulation Under Anesthesia: bulging, protruded, prolapsed or herniated discs without free fragment and the patient is not a surgical candidate; joint pain with little or no relief from steroid injections; frozen or fixated articulations (frozen shoulder, hip, knee, etc); failed low back surgery; compression syndromes with or without radiculopathies caused from adhesion formation (sciatica), but not associated with osteophytic entrapment (bone spurs or narrowing of the spinal canal because of bone formation); restricted motion which causes pain and apprehension; unresponsive to manipulation and adjustment when they are the therapy of choice; unresponsive pain which interferes with the function of daily life and sleep patterns, but which falls within the parameters for manipulative treatment; unresponsive muscle contraction which is preventing normal daily activities and function; chronic recurrent neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction syndromes which result in a regular periodic treatments; neuromusculoskeletal conditions that are not surgical candidates but have reached maximal improvement with other treatments.
